NYC Designers Rochambeau take us inside their studio as they prep for NYFW

The name is French for “rock-paper-scissors,” though we’d venture the secret to Rochambeau’s success has more to do with self-determination than simple luck. As longtime friends, designers Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper started out in printing—an industry where Cooper’s family has roots—before expanding operations to one of their shared passions: menswear. Today, they are garnering a passionate fan base (remember Interview Magazine’s “Jack and Jill” editorial featuring Natasha Vojinovic, exclusively clad in Rochambeau?) while racking up some seriously honorable mentions. They are currently finalists for the prestigious Ecco Domani award, and members of W Hotels’ Fashion Next program, alongside designers Suzanne Rae and Nomia. Just days before their debut at The Box at Lincoln Center, the guys walked us through the inspiration for their Fall/Winter 2012 collection. Inspired by pagan mythology, the collection reveals the darker side of the holidays while lending a new silhouette for the modern man. With all the excitement currently surrounding them, Rochambeau insist they’re just getting started. As Chandler explains, it’s all about “keeping the presses running and making cool clothing.”

A self-described “pet project projected to sound as good as pet sounds,” Dnonkong is a haunting new project by Echo Park artist Duncan Thum. We’re hoping to hear a lot more of these pet sounds.

Our Fashion Next series continues with a peek into the studio of Nomia designer Yara Flinn

It should come as no surprise that Nomia designer Yara Flinn started out as a sculptor and video artist—just take a peek at her artful, sharp tailoring and her penchant for unexpected draping and cut-outs. Flinn let the Arcade sit in on a day of work at her Williamsburg studio recently, where we marveled at her technique as the conversation meandered around aspiration, influence and style. As one of five designers hand-picked by W Hotels Global Fashion Director Jenne Lombardo to participate in Fashion Next, Flinn described how “the program helps designers achieve a higher level of production value.” It certainly felt that we were on higher ground as we watched her looks march down the runway at The Box at Lincoln Center just days later. In the sophisticated, self-assured hands of the 29-year-old designer, these are utterly modern clothes—luminous, distinctive and totally next.

Want more Fashion Next? Coming up, we’ve got an exquisite peek into the Rochambeau studio, and don’t miss yesterday’s exclusive with designer Suzanne Rae.

Experience New York Fashion Week with Suzanne Rae, one of W Hotels' Fashion Next designers

“You always want to grow and make every season better than the last,” mused designer Suzanne Rae when we visited her recently at her Brooklyn studio. Rae was deep into final preparations for her presentation at The Box at Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week, though she took a moment to sit down with the Arcade and share the inspiration behind her fall collection. As one of five designers hand-selected by W Hotels’ Global Fashion Director (and NYC style maven) Jenne Lombardo to participate in Fashion Next, it would prove to be a very hot Fall 2012 indeed.

A launchpad and creative incubator, Fashion Next is dedicated to nurturing emerging design talent and giving them the boost of business savvy most designers don’t experience for countless seasons. As Rae sent her models down the runway just days after our visit—all fluid romance and fresh appeal—it became clear that there’s an undeniable new talent on the scene. Rae herself describes the collection as a bit “poetic and rock ‘n’ roll.” Unabashedly feminine and yet not without a sense of humor (see: her uber-faux fox stole), hers is a striking new personality on the New York runway. Call it a ray of light.

Stay tuned, Arcade Players, as the Fashion Next coverage continues. Next up, we’re taking you in the studio and front row with Rochambeau and Nomia.

Can’t get enough of the haunting sounds of BlindBenny? Neither can we. The NYC duo is gearing up for their upcoming tour dates, but in the meantime, visit them online to download their track “No Honor.”

Arcade44 takes a peek at the front row with designer Karen Walker herself. The New Zealander, always one of the bright spots of NYFW, took a moment from the hustle backstage to tell us a bit about her 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-inspired Fall collection. This time, her “high casual” sensibility was rendered a bit luxe, with mermaid-slick metallic jacquards and boyish coats in deep-sea shades of navy. Oh, and the shades? Still totally obsession-worthy. Have a look for yourself.

Illustrator Shantell Martin gives us a glimpse at her process as she gears up for show in SoHo, NYC

Drawing, as the artist Keith Haring once described it, “brings together man and the world. It lives through magic.” We were reminded of his words when glimpsing this clip, a peek behind the looking glass at artist Shantell Martin’s unique alchemy. The UK-born artist has been incredibly busy ever since adopting NYC as her new hometown. She’s recently shifted from her large-scale light drawings—which she’s created live in locales as varied as the Yota Space Festival in St Petersburg, Russia and MoMA in NYC—to her more intimate, intricate line drawings. Nothing is safe from Shantell’s Midas touch—adidas kicks, walls, clothing. This week, she brings her uncanny eye to SoHo denim atelier 3×1. Her limited-edition denim will be on display, as well as items benefitting Print 4 Change’s non-profit partners Healing Haiti and Opportunity International. After all, the magic’s in the make of it.

See it all up close Thursday, December 15 at 7pm. 3×1 is located at 15 Mercer Street.

How do you describe what you do?

Basically I draw; I’m an illustrator, a creator over many mediums. My main focus or joy is to make experiences between myself, the art and the audience. I love to be in the crowd creating, drawing on people, making works that cannot be repeated or experienced twice.

You’ve recently shifted your focus from very large, public light installations to the more intimate drawings as seen in the video. How does the shift feel from your perspective?

The shift has gone full circle. I started with the more intimate, detailed drawings that I do now, which are much more personal and perhaps work better one-on-one and almost as a way of saying, ‘Come here. Look at these tiny worlds. Give them your attention.’ I started waving this super colorful, moving, projected flag around to music. Now I find myself really wanting to go back to the humble tools of pen and paper, where my true passion lies.

You have been working a lot with clothing – the kicks in the video, your upcoming collaboration with 3×1 denim – how does the wearer infuse the artwork?

The first art I did that could be worn was on people. After my live shows in Tokyo, people would come up to me and ask me to sign their arm or hand and I would always draw a little character or write a word that was present in my performance, this slowly developed into a whole series of collaborations with photographers and fans or friends’ faces. There is something quite special about your art smiling, happy and walking away from you. In Japan I worked on collaborations with different brands making silk linings and very limited t-shirts, which I really enjoyed, it gave the [work] a whole new life.

3×1 is pretty incredible, from the attention to detail that goes in to making the jeans, to the knowledge they have of the history and culture of denim, so I’m excited to be working with a brand that in a way reflects my one of a kind, detailed drawings.

You have so much coming up in 2012. What are you most looking forward to?

The biggest highlight would be the show I’ll be doing at Milk Studios gallery with Ben Watts and 3×1 in mid-January. It’s going to be lot of fantastic stuff happening in one night. I’m also excited about working with MNP, a project I have with cellist Anna Callner. Anna works on cello and beats and I do visuals and vocals and we only play in homes to explore that more intimate “going in” experience.

There’s something fantastic about witnessing the secret language shared by best friends. When that world of inside jokes and kept secrets reveals itself in the form of an edgy and yet earthy new jewelry line—as it does in the Brooklyn studio of BFFs Charlotte Greville and Danielle Mayer—expect the sparks and sawdust to really fly.

Greville and Mayer of Best Friends Brooklyn go way back to freshman year, when they met in cheerleading practice, no less. Today, the stylish duo is devoted to their burgeoning line, now available at Cynthia Rowley stores. The heart of BFB’s latest collection is realized in wooden statement jewelry—bold cuts of marble ebony and burl wood—juxtaposed with chains of vintage glass beads. An incredible amount of love goes into each piece, from the hand-rendered baubles, to the bit of wood polish Greville tucks into mail orders, for longevity. Like a true friendship, these pieces are built to last.

BFB has a little treat for our Arcade Players. Use the promo code ARCADE44 to receive 30% off when you shop the collection.

To walk into the Brooklyn studio of Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer is to be immersed in their world. The industrial space—all high ceilings and concrete floors—is filled with Genger’s oversized sculptures, the inspiration for Mayer’s jewelry. What she describes as “muscle and bone,” are the workings of an incredibly tactile collection created with unexpected materials, a dynamic fusion of two sensibilities—sculptor and jeweler. From knotted chokers dipped in candy-hued ceramics to bracelets rendered in climbing rope and brass chain, the collection has an inherent push-and-pull. Heavy and light, masculine and feminine, East Coast (Genger) and West Coast (Mayer). Collectively, it’s electric. In our increasingly digital world, it’s nice to have something to touch.

Designer Jeremy Scott preps his Spring 2012 collection, gives Arcade44 a peek behind the curtain

Arcade Players, we’ve teased you enough. Sure, we had a fun romp through the Jeremy Scott Spring 2012 collection recently, but now it’s time to really dig in with fashion’s great pop artist. Mr. Scott gave the Arcade unprecedented access to the makings of his collection, from the creative team who helps him bring it all together, to visits from his supportive Missourian family, to the fantastic blasts of color realized on the runway. Viewing it all from the eye of the storm, we found him to be a thoughtful ringmaster, driven by a rare intelligence and imagination. The micro documentary premiered last night at his Art Basel Miami Pop Up Store. Today, we have it for all of you.

A big thank you to stunner Becca Schack for supplying the dope tunes, co-produced by Rich DeCicco and Gil Talmi. NYC, don’t miss Becca onstage at Arlene’s Grocery on January 31!

Modern sole man George Esquivel on the secret to his style at Paris Fashion Week

He’s stepped into the arena in a major way ever since landing his CFDA nom, but George Esquivel tells us that deep down, he’s still a California dude at heart. We met him in Paris, surrounded by his exquisitely expressive footwear (you may have seen his soles on Janelle Monae or Gwen Stefani) and got to the core of this modern-day cobbler.
