On a breezy night in Miami, when streams of art-lovers made their way through galleries and sand-swept sidewalks, artist Theaster Gates staged an exclusive performance by The Black Monks of Mississippi. Though he’s trained as an urban planner and sculptor, here Gates creates a space for interaction by inviting the singers of Black Monks to “Shine.” For an artist who is interested in “allowing new cultural moments to happen in unexpected places,” the performance is a moving moment, realized as an unexpected surprise for many of that night’s passers-by. We revisit it here, only for our Arcade Players.

It’s Around You // ANR

Yesterday we brought you into the studio with Miami’s ANR, and today we are thrilled to give you a front row seat to the full performance of “It’s Around You,” from ANR’s album Stay Kids. Currently, the boys are hard at work on their follow-up album, which they tell us will definitely be ready for audiences by SXSW 2012. Without further ado, let’s give it up for ANR…

Our love for ANR goes way back, Well, way back in the Internet sense of the term. We first met MJ Hancock and Brian Roberston of ANR during CMJ 2010 at a coffee shop in Brooklyn. We talked about the records that MJ had bought for his dad during their trip, their love for Miami and their former identity as “Awesome New Republic,” which they joked, “when coupled with the more humorous elements of our music, could have easily been misinterpreted as ‘cowabunga pizza party.’” With a good sense of humor and even greater music, we obviously became huge fans of these dudes and their band. This past year ANR added a drummer, bringing their live shows to a new level. If you have never seen them live, do yourself a favor and change that. Luckily, while in Miami for Art Basel this year, we not only got a tour of the ANR studio, but the guys treated us to a private performance. Stay tuned for the full live performance, which will premiere on the Arcade tomorrow. For now, we are excited to welcome you to the ANR studio…

Five // Rashaad Newsome

“I’m trying to take this part of history back,” explains artist Rashaad Newsome of his electric performance art piece “Hair Affair & Five.” Performed at the Miami Art Museum during Art Basel, the dance “mash-up” was created with local musicians, renowned opera singers and NYC-based vogue dancers. Newsome gave us an unforgettable look inside the process while also explaining the foundations of the art form, realized in a power-punch of color and movement while also holding close the five fundamentals of “hands, catwalk, floor performance, dips and duckwalking.” As for “hair affair?” Well, you’ll just have to hear the artist tell it.

Art+Auction Power 100 List Party

It was a mad, mad art world last week as innovators, tastemakers and headliners collided for Art Basel Miami Beach. The Arcade was on the scene at one of the week’s most talked-about events, the Art+Auction Power 100 List Party, co-presented by adidas SLVR at the Mallick Williams installation. The pool-side fete at the Shore Club proved itself the ideal place to throw around a little creative muscle.

Arcade Players, we’ve teased you enough. Sure, we had a fun romp through the Jeremy Scott Spring 2012 collection recently, but now it’s time to really dig in with fashion’s great pop artist. Mr. Scott gave the Arcade unprecedented access to the makings of his collection, from the creative team who helps him bring it all together, to visits from his supportive Missourian family, to the fantastic blasts of color realized on the runway. Viewing it all from the eye of the storm, we found him to be a thoughtful ringmaster, driven by a rare intelligence and imagination. The micro documentary premiered last night at his Art Basel Miami Pop Up Store. Today, we have it for all of you.

He’s stepped into the arena in a major way ever since landing his CFDA nom, but George Esquivel tells us that deep down, he’s still a California dude at heart. We met him in Paris, surrounded by his exquisitely expressive footwear (you may have seen his soles on Janelle Monae or Gwen Stefani) and got to the core of this modern-day cobbler.

He’s Toronto-born and newly transplanted to Berlin, but we managed to catch him in Paris. Designer Michael Thomas of THOMAS Collection took a moment to tell the Arcade about setting out on his own terms. Sharp, smart, and ambiguously tailored, his unisex collection in refined shades of grey leaves the interpretation up to the wearer.
