Suzanne Rae

“You always want to grow and make every season better than the last,” mused designer Suzanne Rae when we visited her recently at her Brooklyn studio. Rae was deep into final preparations for her presentation at The Box at Lincoln Center for New York Fashion Week, though she took a moment to sit down with the Arcade and share the inspiration behind her fall collection. As one of five designers hand-selected by W Hotels’ Global Fashion Director (and NYC style maven) Jenne Lombardo to participate in Fashion Next, it would prove to be a very hot Fall 2012 indeed.

A launchpad and creative incubator, Fashion Next is dedicated to nurturing emerging design talent and giving them the boost of business savvy most designers don’t experience for countless seasons. As Rae sent her models down the runway just days after our visit—all fluid romance and fresh appeal—it became clear that there’s an undeniable new talent on the scene. Rae herself describes the collection as a bit “poetic and rock ‘n’ roll.” Unabashedly feminine and yet not without a sense of humor (see: her uber-faux fox stole), hers is a striking new personality on the New York runway. Call it a ray of light.

Stay tuned, Arcade Players, as the Fashion Next coverage continues. Next up, we’re taking you in the studio and front row with Rochambeau and Nomia.

Can’t get enough of the haunting sounds of BlindBenny? Neither can we. The NYC duo is gearing up for their upcoming tour dates, but in the meantime, visit them online to download their track “No Honor.”
