I Miss You // Carlos Charlie Perez // Film

We can’t imagine discovering anything more beautiful than Carlos Charlie Perez’s video homage to his real life girlfriend. After giving us the backstory on the short film, Perez modestly jokes about I Miss You’s cheesiness. Although it could probably melt the coldest of hearts, I Miss You is far from cheesy. The sweetness is sincere, not saccharine; A 1 minute and 42 second glimpse into real, simple, rapturous love. The short film was originally created for BELIEVER magazine. “My friend Chris Wiley, curator and photographer, was curating the November 2011 issue of BELIEVER magazine, in this issue they asked artists to design paper airplanes. I thought this story would go perfect with this project, just playful enough,” says Perez.

Giving us a look into his real-life inspiration, Perez explains, “The story is quite autobiographic. It’s about my girlfriend Laure Marie Dubois—she is obviously French. We had our first date on a weekday. After work I went to go put on my sweater and realized I brought my Mickey Mouse sweater. I thought I had brought a jacket as well, but realized I didn’t. So I put on the sweater thinking, ‘oh man, she is going to think I am such a kid. I went to meet her and it was raining (of course, very cinematic). When I saw her she was wearing a knitted sweater of the Eiffel tower. We both immediately complimented each other on each other’s lovely sweaters. Sometime later she made me a mix, and the cover she designed for it had Mickey Mouse hanging from the Eiffel Tower. So we have always joked about how I am her Mickey Mouse and she is my Eiffel Tower. Pretty cheesy. Anyways, I thought it would make a great short film.”

Perez also showed us a copy of the drawing that Laure had made for him:

If that ain’t love, we don’t know what is
