If Mikey Fuentes is on deck, consider us there – ready to dance, dance, dance.

What can we say about Mikey Fuentes?  He’s gonna make you move, he’s gonna make you dance – it’s his mission.  When you listen to a set – wait, when you EXPERIENCE a set, you’ll hear the influence of 90s House, but here’s a DJ who appreciates it all, everything good.  You’ll get a bit of funk, disco, you’ll definitely get some house “and anything with a deep low-slung bass”.   He’s inspired by his neighborhood, he’s inspired by New York.  You hear it in every track.

But you don’t have to take our word for it, just press play.  Despite a crazy schedule, and travel, he took some time out to create an original podcast for the Arcade and sit down for an interview.

We’ve been lucky enough to enjoy this podcast for a few days now, we already want more.  You’ve got a friend and a FAN in the Arcade, Mikey Fuentes.  When’s the next party you’re playing?  We’ll be there.

How do you describe your sound?

I would say my sound is a crossbreed of many genres that I am heavily influenced by, including Disco, House and anything with a deep low-slung bass.  I love music that makes you move, anything you can lose yourself in, that has a rhythm and pulse.

What neighborhood do you live in? How does it influence your sound?

Living in the heart of the artists’ community of Bushwick, I am inspired through my local neighbors style, taste and creativity.  The neighborhood is the home to an array of warehouse and loft parties, all of which are influential in my music life.  Ultimately, living in a loft myself makes it possible to play my music and have no complaints from the neighbors, helping me cultivate and experiment with new sounds.

Tell us about how you came to make music your life.

I have always been an aficionado of House music, but only as a listener up until recently.  Randomly, my friend and now DONKEY co-production partner Josh Sparber and I, sat down one day and started to lay down beats.  Other friends of ours, Nita and Will of The Carry Nation, asked us to remix their track coming out on Get Up Recordings, with London producers The Cucarachas, birthing the DONKEY remix of “Warriors”.  This process was my stepping-stone into production and DJing.  I continue to learn a lot and have a newfound respect for DJ’s and producers and look forward to future projects.

What’s got you excited about music right now?

The 90’s inspired house sounds of the moment throughout a variety dance genres excites me a lot.  Classic 90’s house is what got me hooked to the music and now its resurgence is speaking to a whole new crowd of listeners.

So, we’ve got the time machine warmed up and ready for you to go back to any era in NYC history—where would you choose to take us and why?

If I were going to jump into a time machine and go back to any era in NYC I would step in and let the machine choose.  I think NYC has always been and continues to be an eccentric city, full of great energy, culture and people.  There are too many era’s I want to revisit so I am ready for wherever it wants to take me.

What’s up next for you? Any projects we should be looking out for?

It is an exciting time for me right now as I am DJing numerous venues throughout the city.  I continue to do original production and remixes as DONKEY; we will be DJing at Eastern Bloc onJune 26 and in Berlin on August 31.  You can also follow DONKEY via Beatport that includes links to our music and other social media outlets.  Additionally, I am working on a start-up bicycle storage company, keeping me busy when I am not working on music.
