We met Peder Mannerfelt and Malcolm Pardon at their studio space in a quiet corner of Southern Stockholm. Their joint project, Roll The Dice, is the result of a creative experiment between the prolific musicians. Mannerfelt is known for his work with Fever Ray while Pardon composes for film and television. They’ve created an atmospheric, minimalist and yet moody sound as Roll The Dice, balanced by a symbolic back story they’ve developed of themselves as prospectors (complete with mud-dappled overalls). It all started as a casual project among friends, but with a pretty strict framework. “Every session had to start with nothing, and by the end of the day, every song had to be completed,” explained Pardon. “That was our challenge towards each other—let’s roll the dice and see what happens.” It ends up being a fitting metaphor for what artists do every day: Set out into the wilderness and, what else? Search for gold.
