To see the artist Shantell Martin in action is a bit like witnessing the Big Bang Theory. A universe suddenly appears from a blank canvas (or wall, or perhaps an enthusiastic guest’s limb) realized with a continuous line in black ink. Here, an improvised world takes shape, revealing personal memories and influences from the London-born and now Brooklyn-based artist’s life. Though the result is absorbing, to truly take in the world of Ms. Martin, one must see it unfold in real-time. Luckily for our NYC-based Arcade Players, that opportunity is here, when Martin’s “A Continuous Line” opens at the appropriately-named Black & White Gallery in Williamsburg, Friday, September 21 at 7pm.
